This proposal describes the rationale for further development of Project CATHIE, a web-based pedagogical agent environment designed to teach essential helping skills to human services students in a distance learning environment. Traditional methods for practicing these skills rely on face-to-face interactions with instructors and fellow students. Development of this tool will allow learners at a distance to practice their skills in a realistic environment similar to that found in face-to-face classrooms.
