Researchers have suggested that one possible reason for inappropriate understandings of the nature of science (NOS) is that students seldom get a chance to do science the way scientists do science as opposed to cookbook-type labs (National Research Council, 1996, National Science Education Standards). By redesigning science education courses around a theme of authentic scientific inquiry, we will enhance our students' scientific literacy by assisting in the construction of appropriate understandings of scientific content knowledge and the NOS. The mobile technologies obtainable through this grant will remove significant barriers to cooperative, collaborative, authentic learning and assessment.
