Foundational Strategies for Effective Online Teaching

This web-based workshop introduces faculty to a number of strategies foundational to effective online teaching. Based on the assumption that online teaching dynamics require different competencies and facilitation skills from those required in face-to-face teaching, this session will guide participants through the steps of planning, organizing, and facilitating online courses. The workshop will focus on:

  1. Planning online courses:
    • designing a learner-centered syllabus
    • organizing course content and layout
    • evaluating course effectiveness
  2. Preparing the learning environment:
    • understanding students’ and instructors’ roles and responsibilities
    • getting to know the students
    • empowering students to successfully manage their online learning experience
    • creating an online learning community
  3. Establishing, communicating, and managing student expectations
  4. Identifying effective strategies to reduce faculty workload
  5. Monitoring and managing student performance
  6. Engaging students using:

Have you planned how you will deliver content material that is engaging to students? Teaching online and teaching face-to-face are two totally different approaches; each requires separate methods for student learning and engagement. This workshop will introduce design strategies and effective approaches to deliver quality, accessible lectures using Zoom to engage your students and facilitate their learning of concepts.

Please note, this workshop does NOT focus on the technical aspects of using Zoom; rather, it focuses on strategies that support using it effectively. The technical aspects of using Zoom are provided in a separate workshop titled "Using Zoom to Engage Students." Check the list of workshops for details to register.

    • Prepare lectures for "easy to digest” delivery to engage student learning
    • Create interactive opportunities for student participation and collaboration
    • Identify ways to provide opportunities for feedback and reflection
    • Identify nonverbal strategies to engage student participation

    The following prerequisites are highly recommended to successfully participate in this workshop:
