Occasional planned outages of computing resources are necessary to perform routine maintenance, install updates and address issues. When a system outage is required, the outage will be scheduled for Sunday mornings between 6:00 am and Noon. ODU makes every effort to limit outages to this time period and minimize user inconvenience.
From time to time, we experience unplanned outages, service interruptions, and the need for emergency repairs. While these are rare; they do happen. System outage notices are posted for both planned and emergency outages.
OCCS Homepage
Notices of system outages are posted on the OCCS homepage. System status information is displayed under the ALERTS section. Notices of planned outages are displayed under the NEWS section.
It is recommended that you bookmark the OCCS site and check it periodically to determine if outages may impact class deadlines. System information is also available from the OCCS Technical Support Center at 757-683-3192 or by email at occshelp@odu.edu.

myODU Portal
OCCS News Alerts can be added to your myODU Portal display through the following steps:
- Click on Content/Layout (upper left),
- Click on Add Channel wherever you want to add it on the page,
- Click on News (or Select ALL) then press the Go button
- Click on OCCS System Alerts
- Click on the Add Channel button.
Email Notification
You can be notified when the Blackboard server is out of service via email by subscribing through this form. If you are currently subscribed to the notification system, but would like to be removed, you can unsubscribe.
News Reader and RSS Feed
You can be notified of Blackboard downtime through a news reader by subscribing to our RSS feed.
Severe weather can impact system availability. Check weather sites to view conditions in the Norfolk area. Under some severe weather circumstances, the ODU home page may not be accessible.
In the event of an extensive system outage (1 to 2 days or more), refer to your faculty's policy regarding due dates during system outages.
